For more in deapth guidance on how to use Conditional Formatting, please check this blog post, it covers the most you should know.
As I don't know what version of Excel you have and the layout of your data, but in this example I assume you have Microsoft 365 (i.e. Office 365) and the dates starting from cell F5. Create a new Conditional Format rule and choose to use a formula to determine which cells to format, put in following formula:
=DAY(F5)=2
That will result in a TRUE if the date is the second of the month, any month and year, else it will result in a FALSE.

Thank you Anders - I have used this formula but the conditional format does not work to pick these dates up. I have formatted the dates to date and not text, still no joy. Using MS 2016.
Appreciate your help with this - attached (possible senior moment....)
