Hello,
I require help on a data set please. I am working on excel 2013.
Attached is a set of data for 12 months. The data represents volunteer hours over a period of 12 months, and which category is linked to the volunteering activity.
My goal is to estimate the number of volunteers (not hours) for the 12 months. So, July has 9 volunteers, how many additional volunteers were added in August. Looking at the "Collections category", there were 8 in July and 2 additional in August and so on. There are cases where a volunteer worked in more than 1 Category in a single month, those should be counted as 1 (still 1 volunteer).
Any suggestions would be appreciated, as I am calculating manually, and I have a few years to go. 🙂
Thank you
Norine

Hi Norine,
Welcome to our forum!
First you need to unpivot your data so that it's in a tabular format. Then you need to group the hours for each volunteer each month so you only have one record per volunteer. You can do both of these tasks with Power Query.
Once you've cleaned the data layout you can use a PivotTable to count the number of volunteers each month and the month on month change. See file attached.
I hope that points you in the right direction.
