  • SUMIFS, SUMPRODUCT, INDEX, MATCH, LOOKUP, etc.

Hello Power Query users:

Please confirm that the above functions can be performed just as easily in Power Query and Power Pivot  as in "Excel"?

I am finding more job descriptions requesting knowledge of Excel formulas as above, but there is no mention of Power BI or P Q or P Pivot skills.

Are they missing the development in Microsoft Excel software tools, or am I missing something?

Can someone in the group please shred some light on the differences (if any) using Excel vs PowerQ or Power Pivot, to perform these functions?

Thanks

Hi Trish,

Despite being around for years now, Power Query and Power Pivot are relatively new and many Excel users have never heard of them, or if they have they haven't used them.

That said, Power Query and Power Pivot aren't strictly a replacement for these functions. Sure, Power Query and, or Power Pivot can generate the same end results these functions return, but you might not always want to use Power Query or Power Pivot instead of using INDEX or MATCH in the worksheet.

Power Pivot is a modelling tool, similar to Access in many ways. You wouldn't always want to build a model just for the purpose of doing a SUMIFS or SUMPRODUCT etc.

In other words, you should know the Excel functions as well as how to use Power Query and Power Pivot as this is going to give you the biggest advantage in the job market.

I hope that helps.

Mynda
