Hello Friend;
Good Morning
I have a sample worksheet in which there is following timings
3 : 54 PM - 4 : 03 PM =
4 : 03 PM - 4 20 PM =
5 : 46 PM - 5 : 55 PM =
5 : 56 PM - 6 : 05 PM =
Wondering if Minute and/or Time formula can be used or nested to calculate minutes between two times from only 1 cell , not two
I know if above timing are in two cells , Click on Number Group launcher, then, click on custom on Number Tab, and click on h : mm
Thank you.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Have a great day.

Hi Mitul,
I'm afraid I don't understand what you want. A certain calculation of minutes between two times indicates that you must have two cells, doesn't it?
So do you want to calculate the minutes between a fixed time and one time in another cell?
In the case you gave, you can substract the two cells from each other and with the settings of the cell show how many minutes there are in between.
But maybe you want something else?

Hello Frans;
Good Afternoon
I have a sample worksheet in which there is following timings
3 : 54 PM - 4 : 03 PM =
4 : 03 PM - 4 20 PM =
5 : 46 PM - 5 : 55 PM =
5 : 56 PM - 6 : 05 PM
I have each above timing in only 1 cell , such as D17 (3 : 54 PM - 4 : 03 PM , then, in next cell, D18 (4 : 03 PM - 4 : 20 PM ), so on. Is there function in Excel which will tell me, how many minutes between 3 : 54 PM - 4 : 03 PM , & 4 : 03 PM - 4 : 20 PM.
I know if above timing are in two cells , Click on Number Group launcher(on Home Tab) , then, click on custom on Number Tab, and click on h : mm
Please explain me, how "Minute" function works ?
Thank you.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Have a great day.
Sincerely;
Mitul.

Hi Mitul,
Please always provide a sample worksheet if possible. If you had done so in this case Frans would have understood what you were trying to do.
With regards to the minute function, we have a huge list of Excel functions you can read through to understand how they work. Have you looked through this?
You'll find the Minute function in there too.
If you want to learn how something works please search our blog for an article on it.
Once you've done that, if you still need help, please post a topic in this forum.
Regards
Phil

Good advice Phil. But sometimes it's difficult finding something where you don't know the name or words that give the solution.
Mitul: I'm not sure the minute function gives the right answer to your question with two different times in one cell. I suggest you work with two helper columns. In the first one you convert the first part of the cell, in the second the last part. When carefully done, then you can substract and find your minutes. I think you don't need the minute function here, because you want to know how many minutes between the two times, isn't it?
And indeed: it helps a lot if you provide your example as an attachment with your question.

Nice one Clark! Not sure if it will work with all the times, but it's working fine for this one.
If it is a recognized date and time format before and after -, it will work. For this case, the formula is designed for his data type and the formula will be changed accordingly if data type changed 🙂
