Hi there,
After watching your vid on Embedding Excel files on Web Pages I came up against one little hurdle.
Using the desktop version of excel i have created a series of charts and dashboards. I have used Power Query to source and prep data. i have created a data model in power pivot and written a series of measures. And of course, I have created slicers for interaction.
When I open this same file that is automatically syncing to OneDrive and try to use the slicer I get an error: "This workbook contains external data connections or BI features that are not supported". It also provides a link to "learn more".
Unfortunately the link mostly only provides information about SharePoint. For instance, it explains the difference between using SharePoint Server 2013 and Excel Web App, and that if using the Web App the slicer won't work if there is a data model, because data models are not supported on the Web App. Is this also true for OneDrive? Or is something else going on?
I can rule out the following: the sheet is unprotected and "edit in browser" is enabled. The slicer is unlocked. And, taking it further, the embed code (which i am using on my webpage but doesn't seem to be applicable considering it's not working in OneDrive to start with) does allow "users to sort and filter", and all the other appropriate settings etc.
I have Microsoft 365 Family.
Any assistance would be greatly, hugely, biggly appreciated.
THANK YOU!!!!
Mat
Hi Mat,
I wasn't able to replicate this issue testing with Power Query getting data from inside the workbook and loading it to the data model. i.e. I was able to use Slicers connected to a PivotTable built off the data model.
I wonder if your data is coming from an external source, and whether that might be the issue. Although, I'm not sure what you mean by 'it's not working on OneDrive to start with'. Have you tried to open the file in Excel Online and it's there that you're getting the error?
Another thought is, have you set up automatic refresh on the query? If so, you can't refresh external connections online.

Hi Mynda,
I believe the problem was that I was using power pivot in the original dashboard and power pivot is not supported on OneDrive Personal. I have purchased Microsoft 365 Business and that has solved the issue.
Thanks for taking the time to investigate and respond.
