Hi, I've been using the practice files, but when I add them to the Power Query window, they mostly appear with the steps already done - so I delete the steps and redo them. However, I've found that I can't remove the steps completely! I've tried it on many of the Excel files and as an example will mention the pq_2.02.xlsx file, as it isn't formatted in any way. I've tried deleting the steps, deleting the M-code, copying and pasting the Excel data to a new workbook - saving it with a different name to a different location - and I've tried the Document Inspector - but none of it works. Every time I open a blank workbook - go to Power Query window - From File - From Excel - select the workbook - select the sheet - press Edit button - the Power Query window opens and 4 steps - Source - Navigation - Promoted Headers - Changed Type - are all in the Query Settings window. It sounds so silly, but I'm frustrated at not being able to remove it! Please put me out of my misery! Thanks!
You cannot stop that behaviour, Power Query tries to identify headers and data type for you, that's why it's adding those 2 steps automatically. The first 2 steps are made by you, when navigating to that file. You can remove those automatic steps, of course (just make sure you keep the changes when exiting PQ).
If you want a blank query, go to From Other Sources - Blank Query.
