Hello,

I am trying to import data to Power Query from .xslb and got message:

"Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt"

Is it possible to import data from .xlsb to Power Query?

Thank you!

Maja

Hi Maja,

There should be no problem importing data from binary workbooks.

Which is your version of excel? Try updating excel to install the latest fixes released for excel and power query, then try again. Depending on your version, from File>Account there should be an Update Options button.

Let us know what happens after update.

Hi

Thanks for the tip. I am using Office 365 ProPlus and Excel 2013, 32-bit. In my File>Account>Office Updates I got message "The latest version of office is installed". Probably is something else that is messing with my data upload.

You mean that you are using 2 versions of Excel? With Office 365, you should be able to upgrade to Office 2016. In Excel 2016, Power Query is updated in the same time with excel / office updates. But in Excel 2013 and Excel 2010, you need to download the latest version of the Power Query add-in to have the latest fixes, PQ updates are not available via office updates when PQ is an add-in.

I am using Excel 2013 as this is prerequisite to operate Oracle Smart View for Excel, which I need to use in the organization I am working at. So, no Office 2016 for me yet 🙂

I had similar issue when importing data from .csv files that were not in Mynda's exercises (my working documents) but managed to work it out with our IT administrator by downloading updates.

As I do not have admin rights I need to ask IT to download the latest version of the Power Query add-in to have the latest fixes. How to know that I have the latest version? We did a Query download a month ago from Microsoft.

The latest release was on December 1, here is the article describing the new features added: november-2016-updates-for-power-query/

Another thing you can try is the "Send a Frown" option to report this problem to the Power Query team.

You can also patch the memory limit: http://ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php

If you're using the 32 bit Excel , then you are limited to only using 2GB of RAM for data models, no matter how much memory you have on the PC. You can increase that limit to 3 GB, see the detail from the link for more details.
