It sounds like you haven't used a date field and then grouped them into months. When you use a proper date field and then grouping, the PivotTable knows to sort the months correctly, but when you use a text field for 'month' Excel doesn't know this text is actually a month and you must resort to more manual ways of sorting.
You've discovered a limitation of this approach. I recommend you insert a proper date field and then group them into months so you can avoid custom sorting.

That reminds me of an item I once read where you can make your own sorting list in the way you want it sorted. So if it's text and the purpose is to remain it as text, maybe that's something for you?
On the other hand it's strange that it functioned normal and now doesn't after a while.
If you want to know how to make that sorted list, I'll look for that.
