This tip may only help people with similar handwriting to me - when I write a "y" I make the long line vertical, and that jogs my memory that Y is for vertical, therefore x must be the other one, horizontal.
A bit silly but it works for me.

The way I remember is that it's opposite to the alphabetical order, assuming you read left to right of course.
